SQL test alternative
A SQL test checks one part of an analyst's job.

The short answer
A SQL test tells you whether someone can write a correct query. It does not tell you whether they check the data before trusting it, notice a wrong number on a dashboard, or know when they are unsure. Trial Day tests SQL, Python or Excel inside an hour of real work, alongside those.
What a SQL test does well
Credit where it is due. A good SQL test quickly filters out people who cannot write a join, aggregate by group or handle a date. For a role that is mostly query writing, that is useful, and it is cheap to run.

Puzzle-style SQL questions also reward people who have practised puzzle-style SQL questions, and a model can now write most of those queries on request.
Test SQL inside the work instead
